Well , meet Uni-Cub , a Personal Transporter  manufactured by Honda . We are so familiar with Segway but unlike the Segway , the uni-cub comes with a seat !

While Honda has been associated with cars , motorcycles and even the Asimo  robot , the Japanese maker has unveiled its latest addition , a personal mobility device . Unlike the Segway , the UNI-CUB comes with a seat , a very unique seat on wheels that is very advance . There are no controls but by just shifting the weight of its rider , it allows the rider to control the speed , direction , turn and stops . This is made possible using its impressive balance control technology ,  Honda Omni Traction Drive System , which is a world’s first omni-directional driving wheel system .

The Uni-cub measures  520 x 345 x 745 mm . Its seat has an adjustable range of  745 to 825 mm ,  equivalent to a pedestrian on foot at eye-level , making it very well suited for ordinary , daily , conversational use .

The Uni-cub is powered  by lithium ion battery capable of a range of 6km at full charge . Top speed is 6km per hour . Basically , the  Uni-cub is  good enough for daily use . While the device will be undergoing a 10 month evaluation at the Japan’s National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation , Honda has not indicated any plans to put this device into production for now

Flying Car | The concept

In the past ,  most flying car was modeled from a car and then morphed into a plane . This Terrafugia flying car , dubbed Transition , started as a plane and then attempt to fit in a car . A flying car has always been a dream of many enthusiasts . According to Carl Dietrich , Terrafugia’s founder , it wasn’t until 2004 when FAA created a new category of aircraft that Carl thinks that there is a business potential in the flying car . Carl’s goal isn’t about novelty surrounding the flying car , but it has to be something practical to make it eventually to a everyday man’s car . Flying Car | The Obstacles

The Transition is priced at USD$279k , which is very close to the  price of a brand new  cessna skyhawk 172 . It is already street legal and  it greatest challenge comes from the controls needed for flying and driving . The easiest to do this is probably best to keep them separated . So the Transition comes with a steering wheel for driving and a control stick for flying . There are rudders for flying and steering on the runway , and an accelerator and brake pedal for driving. Also the Transition is designed as a light sports aircraft so that it does not require FAA certification and will  confine to flying only in day light and clear skies .

The Transition has 2 electric motors powering the retractable wing , and the wings are fully extended within 30s from its vertical stand-still position . Transition uses a premium automotive fuel with consumption at 6.7l/100km while driving or 18.9l/hr while cruising .  As a flying car , it can take off and land in the air fields only and subsequently , the driver or pilot can literally fold up the wings and drive home to its parking garage .   For  more information about this flying car , see here . This electric car is retailing at USD$50k to USD$70k  depending upon the choice of battery which in turn affects the performance .  For a USD$70k Tesla model S , the car is equipped with a 85kWh lithium-ion battery with a capability of 300 miles per charge, a sprint of 0 to 60 mph in 5.6s and  a top speed of 125 mph . Its low end cousin retailing at USD$50k comes with a 40kWh battery , capable of 160 m iles per charge , sprint of 0 to 60 mph in 6.5s and a top speed of 110 mph

Tesla Model S is the company’s answer to a semi affordable car . The future of Tesla lies in the success with this Model S  . Unlike other large car makers like Toyota or Nissan who makes many different models , Tesla Motors has only 2 , the roadster and Model S .  There is simply not much room for error and an “OK” car may not be good enough for Tesla Motors .

Tesla Motors plan to sell about 6,000 model S this year and 20,000 next year . The  numbers may appear small but considering a young start-up company , this is big deal . Some industry source felt that 20,000 for a Model S may be a little too high base on past performance , but Elon felt otherwise . The future landscape can change quickly depending upon how oil price perform and also how the electric powered batteries technology has improved over the months and years . Until recently , several car manufacturers like Mitsubishi and Toyota has reported improvement in their battery technology where they are able to reduce the weight and size of the car batteries by half . This is definitely good news for it means either having large vehicle or higher performance .

Tesla Motors has also announced Model X , an SUV capable of a sprint of 0 to 60 mph in under 5s . Production will begin in late 2013 for this  gull wing SUV and deliveries in early 2014 .

The electric cars can be charged either at home using the standard 110v or 240v at the public charging stations in the U.S  . A standard 10kW on-board charger allows 31 miles per 1 hour of charge which is pretty long charging time . A 20kW twin turbo provides twice the range at 62 miles per 1 hour of charge . Anyway , Tesla Motors is building super-charger access across the U.S with a capability of 160  miles in about 30 minutes of charging time for a 85kWh battery .

Moving forward , with the uncertainty in oil prices , and the need to go green , improvement in the technology of batteries will be key to make electric car a success in the near future .

Meet Batmobile’s cousin , the Nissan DeltaWing . This unusual V-shaped vehicle is scheduled to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race this year on June 16 and 17.

Dubbed the “Batmobile” by enthusiasts , the Nissan DeltaWing was developed by British designer Ben Bowlby, US motorsport entrepreneur Don Panoz, former US Formula 1 driver Dan Gurney, the Highcroft Racing Team and Michelin Tyres North America . Now Nissan has just joined the team, adding  its name to the project and supplying the engine.

“This announcement gives Nissan the opportunity to become part of a ground-breaking motorsport project and one which could shape the future of the sport,” said Nissan executive vice-president Andy Palmer in a statement.

Andy Palmer further added that  the Nissan DeltaWing could shape the future of endurance motorsport, and insists the research and development work going into the car will filter down to Nissan’s future production car range.

The Nissan DeltaWing team intends to use the vehicle , to showcase its  technology.  The car has several interesting features


  • It has half the weight about 1300 lb
  • It has half the aerodynamic drag of conventional racers
  • It is being powered by a  rear mounted , super efficient 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine
  • It expect to use half the amount of fuel as conventional racers despite having only half the power

The sleek Nissan DeltaWing,  has a long thin “fuselage” extending to two narrow front tyres aligned close together. The driver sits well back, almost over the rear axle.  All the weight is at the rear, which Nissan says makes the DeltaWing highly manoeuvrable.

Though  Nissan DeltaWing is being prepared for the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race in June, it has no chance of winning.  The reason is because its concept and design is too  radical and  does not  conform to any existing championship  rules and regulations, and will have no direct competitors.

While it won’t be picking up points, the Le Mans 24 Hours organisers have invited the team to race from ‘Garage 56’ – a pitlane spot reserved for experimental cars. It will carry the race number ‘0’  as a non-competitive, exhibition racer. The Le Mans race is important for the race provide a platform for it to show off its advanced high-performance technology, some of which is expected to find its way to road car

“As motor racing rulebooks have become tighter over time, racing cars look more and more similar and the technology used has had less and less relevance to road car development,” Nissan executive VP Andy Palmer. “Nissan DeltaWing aims to change that and we were an obvious choice to become part of the project.

It “embodies a vast number of highly-innovative ideas that we can learn from,” he said.

“At the same time, our engineering resources and commitment to fuel efficiency leadership via our PureDrive strategy will help develop DeltaWing into a testbed of innovation for Nissan”.

There is a new member in the super car club . It has everything a super car ought to have …. high output engine , carbon fiber , paddle shift transmission , powerful brakes , aerodynamics features similar to that of a fighter planes and everything else  . Unlike most super cars , it is not Italian , its not German , its Japanese . Its called the LEXUS LFA !!!

This super car represent close to 10 years of hard work by Toyota brightest and smartest car engineers  , and the results is pretty astonishing . Under the hood is a 552 horse power , 4.8 litre , V10 engine . The engineers design the engine as small and as light weight as possible and although it has 10 cylinders , it weigh less than a V6 . The engine is manufactured by Yamaha and before the engines gets into the car , the engine went through a series of fine tuning by Yamaha sound instrument  engineers .

On the super car  dash board , the main panel  has a single LCD screen , displaying all the relevant information . The LFA will rev from idle to redline in just over  half a second . The conventional analog tachometer instrument simply cannot register and react quickly to this . Over 65% of the LFA is made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer , designed and manufactured in house . According to Toyota , the carbon fiber construction is similar to aeronautical standards . The LFA is one of the most ferocious car to ever  comes out of Japan ….. or is it ?

The Lexus LFA versus Nissan GT-R . It has never been an ALL Japan title  fight quite like this   . We just want to know who is faster over a quarter mile . The LFA wins barely . Watch the race again but this time more closely . At the start ,  the all rear LFA is at a disadvantage compared to the all wheel drive GT-R and its superior traction . By the time the car reached 60MPH , the GT-R is still in the lead with its quick start and aggressive gearing . The Nissan GT-R hit 60 MPH in just 3.5s , while the Lexus trailed behind by just 0.3s . Around the middle of the track the tables starts to turn . The GT-R gearing advantage begins to count for less than the higher revving and more powerful engine of the LFA . By the finishing line , the LFA has  just manage to lead  ahead of the GT-R    by completing the quarter mile in 11.8s at 123MPH . The GT-R is just a tick behind with 11.9s at 120.1MPH
